A bottle of 50 year old Macallan fetched £12,350 at a rare whiskies auction held at McTear's Auctioneers in Glasgow recently.

The whisky is a combination of three casks distilled between 1926 and 1928, was bottled in 1978 and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity dated 4 July 1983.

The auction attracted collectors worldwide, with The Macallan going to a US buyer.

McTear's whisky specialist Andy Bell, pictured, commented: "We are not aware of a Macallan anniversary 50yo being sold at this price before anywhere in the world.

"At each sale we're seeing an increasing number of quality bottlings attracting more and more collectors.  Whisky continues to hold its own as a long-term investment opportunity."

The old record was  £11,750  sold to a private collector from California at McTear's auctioneers last year and it was also Macallan 50 yo.
